Your Cafe Order Is a Tell. Here's What It Says
There is a version of you that exists only in front of a counter. It has a usual, an opinion about milk, and a strong private view on how long a queue should be before the whole plan is abandoned.

Yemen, a ban in Mecca, and a shop in Oxford
Coffee as a drink is first documented in fifteenth-century Yemen, where Sufi orders used it to stay alert through night prayers. It travelled north through the port of Mocha into Ottoman cities, and made authorities nervous almost at once. In 1511 the governor of Mecca, Khair Beg, tried to prohibit it after finding people drinking it and, worse, talking. Cairo overturned him.
Coffee houses were established in Constantinople by the 1550s and reached England a century later: Oxford in 1650, run by a man recorded only as Jacob, and London in 1652, where Pasqua Rosee opened a shed in St Michael's Alley.
Penny universities, and a market that started at a table
Entry to a London coffee house cost a penny, which bought newspapers, pamphlets and argument with strangers who outranked you, hence the nickname penny universities. Charles II issued a proclamation in December 1675 to suppress them as seedbeds of sedition, and withdrew it within weeks under enough protest to make the point.
Two of them became institutions. Edward Lloyd's coffee house, open from 1686, attracted shipping men and began circulating maritime news, a trade that grew into Lloyd's of London. Jonathan's, in Change Alley, housed the stockjobbers thrown out of the Royal Exchange and became an ancestor of the London Stock Exchange. Vienna's coffee house culture became heritage in its own right, entered on Austria's national inventory of intangible cultural heritage in 2011.
The machines that rewrote the menu
Angelo Moriondo patented a bulk steam brewing machine in Turin in 1884; Luigi Bezzera made it work cup by cup in 1901, and Desiderio Pavoni put it on counters from 1905. The crema on top of a modern espresso arrived later, with Achille Gaggia's spring-lever machine of 1948, which pushed water through the grounds at far higher pressure. Customers reportedly assumed the foam was a fault.
The flat white is much younger and its parentage is disputed between Sydney and Wellington, with rival claims from the mid-1980s and no document that settles it.
What an order can honestly tell you
Coffee personality claims are everywhere and they thin out badly under inspection. The one usually cited, linking black coffee to one temperament and lattes to another, traces back to an online survey of about a thousand people, publicised in 2013 and never reviewed.
Your order is shaped by the cafe near your work, the price, the year you started drinking it and who taught you. That is interesting, and it is not a personality reading. Read your result as a fond description of a habit, not a verdict on the person holding the cup.
